Camping Holidays – How To Make Them Memorable For The Family

If your next holiday is going to be a camping one then you need to make sure that it’s one that you will not forget. After all, spending time with family is important and this time is precious.  Before you start to look for places to stay or a local tour guide, you need to ensure that you’re camping holiday will be fun so you need to make sure that you pay attention to the little things. Below we will outline the kinds of things that you need to consider to guarantee that your holiday leaves you with fun, long-lasting and happy memories.

Location

If you are after a camping holiday where you can get away from your busy day to day life then you need to make sure that the location that you choose is remote. If, however, you still want access to some action, then you need to make sure the location that you choose for your camping holiday can provide you with that. It is also important to bear in mind that if you do decide to go camping in a more secluded location, facilities may be limited.

Packing

Once you know where you will be camping and the kind of camping that you’ll be doing you can think about what to pack for your trip. In order for your holiday to be successful, you need to have packed properly as it may not be as easy to get a hold of specific items. Bear in mind that you will probably need to pack a lot more for a camping trip then you would for a standard holiday. Below is a list of some of the essential items that you will need to pack:

  •  Tent
  •  Sleeping bag and pillows
  •  Sleeping pad
  •  Hiking boots and backpack
  •  Flashlights
  •  Toothbrush / toothpaste
  •  Insect repellent / sun cream
  •  Toilet paper
  •  Cooking equipment and tools
  •  Multi-tool equipment
  •  Rubbish bags
  •  Food
  •  Matches
  •  Activities for the kids

This is just an outline and you will need to amend this list according to what you require.

Clothing

You need to make sure that you have enough clothing for your camping trip. It’s important to make sure that you pack clothes which will keep you warm. It is best to pack clothing that is made from natural materials such as wool.

The Tent

It doesn’t matter if you’re going on holiday for a weekend and or for a week, you need to make sure that your tent provides you with the comfort that you require. There are lots of different types of tents that you can purchase and they all vary in colour, material, size and shape.  Before you go ahead and purchase a tent, think about your needs. If you need to buy a large tent then make sure it provides you protection from the rain as well as ventilation.

You also want to make sure that you practice putting your tent up before you go on holiday.  Once you have purchased your tent, go into your back garden and try putting it up and down. If you get stuck and are struggling to understand the instructions then use YouTube as there’s bound to be a video showing you how to put your tent up. It may be easy to actually put the tent up, but one of the hardest aspects is being able to put it back in the bag that you purchased it in,  so make sure you pay close attention at this point.

Activities List

Camping enables you to spend time with your family and connect with one another whilst exploring nature. In advance, make sure you have activities in mind that will suit your kids. For instance, you could go fishing with your kids so remember to pack all necessary items such as your fly fishing gear. When fishing, anything that you catch can be prepared into a meal which you can cook together with your children, on a fire that you have also built together. Ultimately, you want to make sure that you have fun so make sure you know so where the right fishing spots are on your campsite. You could also take with you a book which can help your children to identify the fish that they have caught. If you have young children, they may not be interested in fishing so you may want to camp near a beach where they can have fun playing. Another activity that you could do with your children is to create a scavenger hunt. Your children will love exploring the outdoors in search of treasure. Card games are another option as all the family can get involved.

Meals

When you’re on holiday the last thing you want is the headache of thinking about what to eat.  So plan your meals early to avoid worrying about this. You could even cook some meals in advance and take these in containers and all you have to do is heat them up. Regardless of whether you enjoy cooking, it is important that you plan what you will be eating to make sure that you have the food that you require. After all, there is nothing worse than running out of food whilst on your holiday.

The Weather

Although it may be forecasted to be sunny, you need to make sure that you’re prepared for any bad weather. Consider the below:

  • Waterproofs: Make sure you have waterproof clothing and you could also consider purchasing some waterproof spray which will keep your tent dry.
  • In-tent entertainment: If the weather is poor and you end up being stuck in your tent, you need to make sure that you’ve got an area for entertaining.
  • Backup supplies: Make sure you also have your wellies with you in case it does rain and also remember to pack some black bin liners so that you can store your wellies in these and avoid getting mud into your tent and car.

Any camping holiday should be a memorable one and it does not need to be difficult as long as you make sure you plan and prepare well in advance.
